Scott Mueller Scholarships

Deadline: April 2022

Award: $1,000

Each year, the Rotary Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers awards six $1,000.00 scholarships – two each at Central High School, South High School, and Prairie Ridge High School.

Criteria: 

The Rotary of Club of Crystal Lake Dawnbreakers Scott Mueller Scholarship is for a young man or woman pursuing a 4-year college/university degree who has demonstrated school spirit and citizenship through participation in extracurricular activities in high school and in the community with a  grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Financial need can be a consideration. 

Interviews are generally held at each of the high schools at the end of April.

Jennifer Samson Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: March 11, 2022 at 4:00 PM

Award: $1,000

The Jennifer Samson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to assist a student in achieving a two or four-year degree in any area of the Fine Arts.

Criteria: Applicant must be a McHenry County high school graduating student who exhibits a true passion for the Visual and Performing Arts. Preference will be given to an applicant who has participated in any volunteer service and who demonstrates concern for environmental issues.

Mariana Szczesny Scholarship

Deadline: March 11, 2022 at 4:00 PM

Award: $1,000 – $2,000

The Mariana Szczesny Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mariana Szczesny and is intended to assist McHenry County high school graduating seniors to continue in a higher education program of their choice. This scholarship is open to all majors and is for students enrolled in a four-year bachelor’s program, a two-year associates program, or a vocational/technical school.

Criteria: Graduating high school seniors from any McHenry County high school who demonstrate academic excellence, need for financial help, and community involvement.

VAC Veterans Memorial Scholarship

Deadline: March 11, 2022 at 4:00PM

Award: $1,000 – $2,000

Special Requirements: Be a child, stepchild, or grandchild of active duty personnel, or honorably discharged veterans of the United States military, National Guard, and military reservists

The purpose of the VAC Veterans Memorial Scholarship is to assist the children or grandchildren of veterans with the higher education program of their choice.

Criteria: McHenry County graduating high school senior or high school graduate who is the child, stepchild or grandchild of active duty personnel, or honorably discharged veterans of the United States military, National Guard, and military reservists. Students must hold a 2.5 GPA or better (based on a 4.0 scale) and include a photocopy of the DD-214 or Certification of Post Membership when applying.

Hillstriders Distance Running Scholarship

Deadline: April 15th, 2022

Award: Up to $3,000

Special Requirements: Be a long-distance runner (800m+) of the school’s cross country/track team

Criteria: To qualify, the applicant must be a McHenry County resident and/or a graduating senior from a McHenry County High School in good academic standing.  The applicant must be a distance runner (800 meters or longer) on their school’s track or cross-country team. Applicant must have applied and been accepted at a college or university and enrolled in the fall. Receiving the award does not preclude the applicant from applying for and accepting other scholarships, loans, grants, or other aid.

  2.     100 – 250 Word Essay

In at least 100, but less than 250 words, describe on a separate sheet how running has changed your life.  This is a critical portion of the application that sets you apart.  Fritz was always telling a joke or a story.  Have some fun – share your favorite story or memory.  

  1.     Recommendation from a teacher 

            TEACHER RECOMMENDATION

    A letter from a least one teacher verifying the applicant’s academic standing and discussing their leadership skills.

  1.     Recommendation from their cross country coach or track coach

          COACH RECOMMENDATION

A letter from their coach should discuss the applicant’s contribution to sportsmanship, leadership, team spirit, and their influence on the betterment of the sport of running.

Melvin E. Luke Scholarship

Award: $500

Deadline: April 15th, 2022

Special Requirements: Enter an engineering program in college

The Lake County Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers awards the Melvin E. Luke Scholarship to a senior high school student, graduating from a Lake County or McHenry County High School, who will be entering an engineering program at an ABET-EAC accredited college or university. 

Criteria: Graduate from a McHenry Country or Lake County High School who will be entering an engineering program at an ABET-EAC accredited college.

Nancy Fike McHenry County Historical Society Scholarship

Award: $1000

Deadline: April 15th, 2022

Special Requirements: Plan on studying education, history, or social sciences

Criteria: Must be a graduating senior from a McHenry County high school who plans to study education, history, or the social sciences. Must have a minimum GPA 3.0, provide two letters of recommendation (one from a faculty member and one from another representative of the community), show proof of community service, and write a 500-word essay pertaining to McHenry County.

The Friends of Moraine Hills Environmental Scholarship

Award: $1000

Deadline: April 30th, 2022

Special Requirements: Plan on studying environmental science or a related major

Criteria: Qualified applicants will reside and attend a high school in either Lake, McHenry, Kane, Cook, DuPage, Kendall, or Will County, Illinois. They must also plan to attend an accredited college or university, plan to major in a field of study and career directly related to the environment and have a high school GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. One Million Monarchs Scholarship

Award: $2000

Special Requirements: Students who experienced the loss of a loved one during childhood

Criteria: Currently a senior at a McHenry County high school in good standing, recommendation of a faculty member, experienced loss of a loved one during childhood such as a parent or sibling, strong focus on academics, extracurriculars, and volunteerism.

Vincent J. Vittore Memorial Scholarship

Award: $5000

Deadline: 4/4/2022

Special Requirements: Be a cancer patient, cancer survivor, or has an immediate family member that is a cancer patient, cancer survivor, or has passed away due to cancer. 

Criteria: All applicants must meet the following criteria: US Citizen between the ages of 17 and 30; reside in the area (Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry or Will county); be a cancer patient, cancer survivor or has an immediate family member that is a cancer patient, cancer survivor or has passed away due to cancer. “Immediate Family” is defined as Mother, Father, Brother or Sister; plan to enroll as a full-time student (minimum 12 semester hours) in pursuit of a certificate or undergraduate degree at an accredited 2 or 4 year College/University for the 2022-2023 academic year.  Special consideration will be given to those pursuing a journalism degree.
